As we all know, most of us pigeon fancier shared the same experience when it comes to our unforgettable first pigeon. It was a little bit different for me. My father was already raising pigeons before I was born. My father raised WHITE KING PIGEON SQUAB in our vacant lot in MAKATI CITY and sold it for delicacies. When I was growing up, I remembered going with my dad to deliver all the squab in CHINA TOWN, MANILA CITYPASAY CITY to buy pigeon. I spotted a young native blue bar and bought it for 25 pesos. When I got home, my uncle saw the pigeon and built a small loft. When my father arrived from his business trip, he saw the pigeon and didn't like the idea of having a pigeon in the house. He talked to me about the responsibilities that I have to do when raising pigeon. He gave me some tips about feeds and grits. We made a deal after talking that if I can take care of the pigeon for a month without having problems he would build a big loft for me and will ask his friend to give me some good birds. I did all my best to raise that one pigeon. Time went by, one week before my tenth birthday, my father talked to the carpenter to build a loft, it was 8 feet by 5 feet and 6 feet in height with 15 perches in the left side and 10 nest boxes in the right side. I was so happy because at my young age I was the only one in our neighborhood that had a big loft. The following day my dad took me to his friend in CHINA TOWN, we went to the rooftop and the old Chinese guy asked me if I want a RACING PIGEON or a FANTAIL FANCY PIGEON. Of course I selected the RACING PIGEON. He asked me to select four birds that I want inside the loft and I selected one white with black spot at the back, one grizzle, one blue bar and one red checker. He handed me the four birds and I put them in the box. When we got home I didn't want to go down the house and wanted to stay in the rooftop because I was so amazed that I had four new pigeon and this are well bred pigeon. I watched these birds fly everyday in our rooftop and all my friends were jealous because these birds can fly far all over MAKATI. After a year, my father took me to his friend in ROTONDA BACLARAN CITY. This Chinese guy owned a lumber warehouse and did not find out his name until later, his name was JIMMY DEE. Mr. Jimmy Dee gave me four blue bar squeakers. When the birds turned 1 year old, my dad started to trained them. Night before his business trip, we would synchronized our watches then the next day when he reached his destination he will released the birds at exactly 7:00 A.M. That’s when I started timing the bird to determine how many hours for them to fly home. We trained from ILOCOS SUR, NARVACAN, BAGUIO, PAMPANGA, BATANGAS, LAGUNA, LUCENA SORSOGON, and other places of the PHILIPPINES. I had so much fun with my pigeons. At age 14, my father broke the news that I have to go to CALIFORNIA to be with my family. It was one of the saddest day of my life. I had no choice but to give all my beloved pigeon to my best friend. One week before my departure, my friend went to my house and told me that all the birds are gone and somebody broke into his loft. I was so mad and asked my dad to hire a policeman to search for my pigeon and luckily I recovered all my favorite birds and left for CALIFORNIA with a happy smile. Many years have passed by. Now I'm back to the pigeon world and this time I’m old enough to race and can handle pigeon like my father thought me to. I dedicate this website to my late father VIDAL ELGARICO. Without him, I would have never discovered how fascinating and wonderful racing pigeons is all about.
